What every hair salon needs from their website (and what most get wrong)

One new regular client from Google is worth over a thousand pounds a year in rebookings alone. Your website only needs to bring in one a month to pay for itself many times over.

Your booking page is not a website

If you run a hair salon, there is a good chance your website is one of three things. A free page from your booking system. A Wix or Squarespace template you set up one evening. Or nothing at all.

Most salon owners think this is fine. Clients just need to book, right? The link works. The calendar shows up. Job done.

Except it is not done. That booking page is not a website. It is a single function wrapped in someone else's branding, hosted on someone else's domain, built to serve the platform's goals rather than yours. It does not rank on Google. It does not tell your story. It does not show potential clients why your salon is different from the one down the road.

And that matters more than you think.

What happens when someone searches "hair salon near me"

Think about how you find a new restaurant, dentist, or mechanic. You search for it. Your potential clients do the same thing.

When someone types "hair salon near me" or "hairdresser in Leicester" into Google, a list of results appears. Google Maps shows three or four salons. Below that, websites appear in the organic results. If your salon is not there, you do not exist for that person.

A Fresha booking page will not appear in those results. Neither will a Treatwell profile. These platforms rank for their own brand, not yours. A free Wix site with three pages and no SEO structure will sit on page five, which is the same as not existing at all.

Meanwhile, the salon with a proper website, fast loading, with genuine content and structured data telling Google exactly what services they offer and where they are located, that salon shows up. They get the click. They get the booking. They get the client you never knew was looking for you.

The trust problem

Hair is personal. Clients are trusting you with how they look and feel. That decision does not start in the chair. It starts online.

When a potential client lands on your website, they are deciding whether to trust you before they have seen a single cut. Research from Stanford shows that 75% of people judge a business's credibility based on its website alone. If your site is a generic template with stock photos and a booking widget, you look like every other salon. There is nothing to set you apart.

Your work is individual. Your website should be too. Photos of your actual salon. Your real team. Examples of your work. The feel of your space. These things build confidence in a way that a templated booking page never will.

What your website should actually do

A salon website does not need to be complicated. It needs to do a handful of things well.

It needs to load fast. If your page takes more than three seconds, over half of mobile visitors will leave before it finishes. Most Wix and Squarespace salon sites take four to six seconds on a phone. That is clients walking away before they have even seen your prices.

It needs to show up on Google. That means proper page titles, service descriptions, location information, and schema markup that tells search engines exactly what you offer. A page that says "Welcome to our salon" tells Google nothing. A page structured around "Balayage specialist in Leicester city centre" tells Google everything.

It needs to build trust. Show your work. Show your space. Show the people behind the chair. Let potential clients feel what it is like to visit before they have walked through the door.

It needs to make booking easy. This does not mean replacing your booking system. It means embedding it properly within a site that does all the other things your booking page cannot do on its own.

What it does not need to do

You do not need a blog that gets updated every week. You do not need an online shop selling twenty products. You do not need animations, videos, or a chatbot.

You need five or six well-built pages. Home, services, gallery, about, contact, and a booking integration. That is it. Done properly, those pages will outperform a twenty-page Wix site every single time.

Less is more. But only when the less is built properly.

Why your current site is invisible

Speed is a ranking factor. Google has said so explicitly. If your site is slow, it ranks lower. Most template builders produce sites that score between 30 and 50 on Google PageSpeed. A properly built salon website scores 90 to 100.

Schema markup is another factor most salon websites miss entirely. This is the structured data that tells Google your business type, your location, your opening hours, your services, and your reviews. Without it, Google is guessing. With it, you can appear in rich search results with star ratings, prices, and business information displayed directly in the listing.

70% of small business websites have no schema markup at all. That includes almost every salon website built on Wix, Squarespace, or a booking platform's free builder. The salons that do implement it properly have a significant advantage in local search.

What one new client is actually worth

Think about what happens when a new client finds you through Google and books their first appointment. A cut and colour might be 80 to 150 pounds. But that is not a one-off transaction. That client comes back every six to eight weeks. That is six to eight visits a year. Over twelve months, one regular client is worth 600 to 1,200 pounds or more.

Now factor in what else happens. They add a treatment or a toner. They buy a product on the way out. They tell a friend. They bring their sister. They book in for a wedding. One new client from Google does not just bring one appointment. They bring a chain of revenue that compounds over months and years.

Your website only needs to bring in one new regular client per month to pay for itself many times over. That is not a stretch. That is what happens when you show up where people are already searching.

The bottom line

Your booking system is a tool. Your website is your digital shopfront. They serve different purposes and one cannot replace the other.

A proper website brings in the clients who are searching for exactly what you offer. It builds trust before the first appointment. It ranks on Google for the terms that matter. It loads fast, looks professional, and represents your salon the way it deserves to be represented.

The free page from your booking platform does none of this. The Wix template you set up three years ago does very little of it. If your online presence is not actively bringing in new clients, it is not doing its job.

Your work speaks for itself once someone is in the chair. Your website needs to get them there.

How we can help

We build salon websites that bring in new clients. Not booking system landing pages. Not Wix templates. Bespoke builds designed around your salon, your work, and your area.

Photography-led design that shows your best work. Fast load times and proper schema markup so you show up when someone searches for a salon near them. A booking integration that works with your existing system, not a replacement for it. Everything a new client needs to see before they book their first appointment.

We handle hosting, maintenance, and ongoing support. If you need professional photography of your salon and your work, we can arrange that too.
