Your £2 hosting is killing your website

Shared hosting is like sharing a ride to work with 15 strangers. When one of them does not show up, everyone is late. When one of them causes trouble, nobody gets where they need to go.

Two pounds a month sounds like a bargain

You needed hosting. You searched for the cheapest option. You found a plan for two pounds a month, maybe less. Unlimited bandwidth, free SSL, one-click WordPress install. It sounded like everything you needed.

What the listing did not mention is that your website now shares a server with 100 to 500 other websites. You are all sharing the same processor, the same memory, the same IP address, and the same bandwidth. When one of those sites gets a traffic spike, or runs a badly written plugin, or gets hacked, every site on that server feels it. Including yours.

It is like sharing a ride to work with 15 strangers. When one of them does not show up, everyone is late. When one of them causes trouble, nobody gets where they need to go. Except with shared hosting, it is not 15 strangers. It is 500.

Your website is slower than you think

The first thing a server does when someone visits your website is respond. That initial response is called Time to First Byte, or TTFB. It is the time between the visitor's browser asking for your page and the server starting to send it back.

On a typical shared hosting plan, TTFB sits between 400 and 800 milliseconds. That is before a single image loads, before a single line of text appears. On a properly configured edge network, the same response takes under 50 milliseconds. That is not a marginal difference. It is a tenfold one.

Your visitors do not know what TTFB is. They just know your site feels sluggish. They clicked a link, nothing happened for a second, and they hit the back button. Google knows what TTFB is, though. Server response time is a Core Web Vital input. A slow server drags down every performance metric your site is measured by.

Your emails are landing in spam

On shared hosting, your website shares an IP address with every other site on that server. If one of those sites sends spam, or gets compromised and starts sending spam without the owner knowing, the IP address gets blacklisted. Your emails get blacklisted with it.

Up to 80 percent of emails sent from a blacklisted shared IP land in spam folders. Your quotes, your booking confirmations, your replies to enquiries. All filtered out before the customer sees them. They think you never responded. You think they were never interested.

Most cPanel shared hosting puts hundreds of domains on the same mail server IP. Some of them are spammy. Some are owned by people who got phished and had their accounts compromised. You have no control over what your server neighbours do. But you share the consequences.

One compromised site infects the rest

Shared hosting means shared risk. If one website on your server has a security vulnerability, an attacker can use it to access other sites on the same server. Your website does not need to have a weakness. Your neighbour's does.

Patchstack counted 11,334 new WordPress ecosystem vulnerabilities in 2025, a 42 percent increase over the previous year. On a shared server running dozens of WordPress installations, each with their own collection of plugins and themes, the attack surface is enormous. One unpatched plugin on one site can be the way in for all of them.

Budget hosts rarely isolate accounts properly. The security of your website depends on the security habits of every other customer on your server. That is not a risk you can manage. It is a risk you inherit.

Downtime costs more than you think

Shared servers go down. Traffic spikes from one site overwhelm the shared resources. Hardware fails. Software conflicts between accounts crash the server. When it happens, every site on that server goes down together.

A six-hour outage is enough to drop your Google rankings by 30 percent, with the damage lasting up to 60 days after the site comes back. Google's crawlers visit your site regularly. If they find it unavailable, they reduce how often they crawl it. Fewer crawls mean slower indexing. Slower indexing means lower visibility. The outage lasts six hours. The ranking damage lasts two months.

For small businesses, downtime costs between $137 and $427 per minute in lost revenue and recovery. That two-pound monthly saving starts to look very different against a single afternoon of downtime.

What proper hosting looks like

A properly hosted website does not sit on a shared server waiting for its neighbours to cause problems. It is served from edge servers, distributed across multiple locations, so the closest server to your visitor delivers the page. The response is measured in milliseconds, not seconds.

Static sites and modern frameworks do not need a traditional server at all. The pages are pre-built and cached at the edge. There is no database query on every page load. No PHP execution. No shared resources. The page is already built and waiting. It just needs to be delivered.

That is why a well-built static site on an edge network scores 90 to 100 on PageSpeed while a WordPress site on shared hosting struggles to break 50. It is not just the code. It is the infrastructure underneath it.

The bottom line

Two pounds a month is not a saving. It is a bet that none of the 500 other websites on your server will spike, get hacked, send spam, or run a badly written plugin. When that bet fails, your site slows down, your emails land in spam, your rankings drop, and your customers leave. You saved two pounds a month and lost two months of visibility.

The numbers are not subtle. Shared hosting delivers server response times ten times slower than an edge network. A six-hour outage can drop your Google rankings by 30 percent for 60 days. Emails from a blacklisted shared IP land in spam 80 percent of the time.
